Rest Day at Niagara Falls

Note: Dan is paraphrasing excerpts from Liz’s ride journal.

Day 22 was a zero day at Niagara Falls. I’ve been to the falls a few times but several folks in the group wanted to go on the Maid of the Mist so I went along. It was fun getting wet because I chose to instead of being drenched by rain! I took lots of pictures but soon had to get back to the hostel in order to do some bike maintenance. All the rain had caused a big build up of grime on the bike – it needed a thorough cleaning and lubrication. At one point I locked my bike up only to return and find that the lock would not would unlock – my bike was stuck locked to a post. Fortunately the hostel owner had a set of bolt cutters and I was able to go back and free my bike. Then off to a bike shop to get another (better) lock. Lesson learned – be wary of cheap locks!

One last photo of the falls as I cycled back to the US side

Day 23 is 54 miles — I plan to ride the whole route — the first full day of riding since my knee blew up. The route started in Canada on the Niagara Parkway and crossed back into the US at Buffalo. Then through the city of Buffalo and eventually back along Lake Erie. My plan was to ride by myself so I could take breaks as often as I wanted – I’m feeling pretty good but still a bit wary with the knee.

The campground was on Lake Erie and had a beach that reminded me of the shores of lake Michigan in Wisconsin. The water was enticing so I went for a swim in the chilly water – it was refreshing after the ride.

  1. No sharks…no jellyfish! 🙂 And I can imagine your knee felt great, being buoyant and in cold water!

  2. Hi Liz! Finally got connected with your ride page after book club & have caught up on your venture. Sorry about the knee (you know I relate) & continue to listen to your body. Looking forward to your future posts ❤️
